Get Your Electric Motor Running
Get Your Electric Motor Running Get Your Electric Motor Running When we think of electric transportation, thoughts quickly turn to Teslas, Leafs, and electric cars will be the wave of the future. But lost in the undertow may be the electric motorcyclea two-word term many people have never even uttered. But with creations such as the Mission R Cycle and its speeds in excess of 150 mph, that may be changing.Karl Johnson, mechanical engineer for Mission Motors , San Francisco, CA, explains how the electric motorcycle drivetrain works. Its battery pack, motor controller, which changes from DC to AC current, and that supplies the electric motor with the AC current. Those building blocks make up the energy storage and supply the force for acceleration. There are no moving parts besides the bearings. We dont have any camshafts or a transmission, just direct drive, one gear. A single gear welches a great simplification in terms of packaging.Speed FocusFor the company, they shot for eye-openi ng speeds to, at the very least, overcome a myth. Its been put out there that electric lacks in performance, he says. Its important to do everything you can to give people confidence.Just as impressive may be that it can go from 0-60 in less than three seconds. A great part of electric vehicles is all of the torque from zero rpm, he says. You dont have to slip in the clutch to get going, youre not shifting, all thats taken out for accessibilityeven for people without a lot of experience. According to the company website, the bike actually starts with 120 ft/lbs of torque. In addition, it has a range of 100-150 miles. Johnson says they continue to work on improving it even though most sport bike riders go no longer than 60-100 miles per trip in his estimation.Mission Rs powertrain is contained within a package one-tenth the size and weight of an equivalent traditional internal combustion engine. Image Mission MotorsErgonomics AngleLooking back, the biggest challenge in building the Mi ssion R welches actually in creating the battery pack. Trying to get a defining balance between weight and energy and then fitting a battery pack into the vehicle in an ergonomic way was tough, Johnson says. You want to make sure the battery pack isnt poking out where a riders knee should be. There is a fairly defined shape for the battery cell we useits a thin rectangleand we had to package those into modules and then package the modules into a battery pack. For the ergonomics, they went about things a little differently. When it comes to ergonomics, many spend a lot of time doing preliminary work, sitting on it and feeling things out. Changing it by putting clay on and shaving it down, fine-tuning the shape. We instead went straight from a CAD model developed by the stylist Tim Prentice into molds for body work, and we assembled it. I think its the first time he did it without any clay and he was excited by how well it turned out. The riding position is an aggressive one so when yo ure on track you can deal with nice twisties. In the future, theyre shooting for a more personal riding experience. So many parameters can change how the vehicle performs and weve talked about having the person step up to the motorcycle, have it recognize you, and adjust to how you want to ride, he says. That would be funEric Butterman is an independent writer. Its been put out there that electric lacks in performance. Its important to do everything you can to give people confidence.Karl Johnson, Mission Motors

5 ways to break yourself out of a February Funk
5 ways to break yourself out of a February Funk5 ways to break yourself out of a February FunkThere are a few things I can always rely on in life death, taxes, my sister not returning the clothes she borrows, autumn anxiety, and a February funk in the middle of winter gloom.Even though a count of its days says differently, February feels like the longest month of the year every year. And if I dont do anything about it, Im expecting the same this year. Its not hard to understand why I feel this way. Living in Chicago, by February Ive already endured months of sub-freezing temperatures, snow, and a general greyness that wont go away. Everyone is sneezing and coughing, and Ive been wearing the same winter coat as my uniform for months. The holidays are over, spring is supposed to be coming, but its still dark outside when I leave the office at 5 p.m. These things combined leave me lackingmotivationand drive. If I let them sink in, Im left feeling disconnected and despondent. But just as Iv e learned to not let the Sunday Scaries ruin the weekend, Ive decided not to let the February Funk get me down this year. Here are five ways experts say you can fight it.1. Exercise regularlyWe knowexercisehelps prevent and improve a number of health problems - high blood presaya, diabetes and arthritis, for example. Butresearchon the link between depression, anxiety, and exercise shows that the psychological and physical benefits of exercise can also help improve mood and reduce anxiety. The key is making it a habit. Once exercise becomesa part of your life, you notice that you have a lot more energy than you used to and are by far less easily fatigued.2. Try new thingsDay-to-day, routines are good. They give us a sense of discipline, which allows us to commit to lengthy projects and finish them by deadline. They also give us a sense ofcalmand order. But routines can also make us feel stuck. Thats why breaking up your schedule with something new can have a greatimpact on your happin ess. When you try new things, you put your brain into new situations that force it to think in unique ways. This stimulates creativity, which eventually rubs off in other areas of your life.3. Set small goalsSetting goals when youre down can feel nearly impossible - a far cry from feeling ambitious. But settingsmall, attainable goalsis critical to making sure you dont lose motivation. And make sure those goals have a timeline. Making a list of things you want to achieve is great, but if you dont put a timeframe around them then theyll be put off until tomorrow and will never get started. Think about using theSMART Goalsframework to break up tasks into manageable parts.4. Express gratitudeResearcher Robert Emmons has conducted a number of studies onthe link between gratitude and wellbeing. His research has found that gratitude reduces toxic emotions such as envy, frustration and regret, and increases positive emotions such ashappinessand contentment.5. Listen to musicYou likely have a few tunes that you know lighten your spirits. Nows the time to crank them up. On theirmusic and mental health page, the American Music Therapy Association lists over a dozen studies supporting the benefits of music therapy for persons withdepressionandanxiety.Theres a science behind formal music therapy, but putting your headphones in and pressing play on your favorite Spotify playlist can help, too. The mix of melody, harmony, and rhythm stimulate the senses and promote calmness by slowing down breath, heart, rate and other bodily functions. If youre overwhelmed by a funk, help is availableThe February funk makes sense were coming down from our holiday highs, and summer, while the light at the end of the tunnel, cant even be seen yet. Everyone has their own perfect recipe for a February funk, but that doesnt mean you should let it mess with your mind, or leave you feeling lost or cloudy.Being more aware of your thoughts andbehaviorscan help prevent you from descending into the fun k and being swallowed by it. Even if you feel powerless right now, there are steps you can take and people that can help you move forward. If you need a little help or guidance along the way, its OK to ask for it. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to your overall health and wellbeing, and a therapist can help you process why youre feeling stuck or unhappy. This article first appeared on Talkspace.

Why its OK to take time off to grieve the death of your pet
Why its OK to take time off to grieve the death of your petWhy its OK to take time off to grieve the death of your petSometimes we find family in the most unexpected places. Heatzu sich Vokes found Dushi, an Aruba Cunucu dog, wandering near her familys Aruba rental home in 2005. I welches told no collar means no owner. I quickly put a collar on him, shares Heather. She took him to the veterinarian and then flew Dushi to his new home in New York.Twelve years later, Dushi welches diagnosed with a heart condition and a mass on his spleen. Surgery was too risky for a dog his age, so Heather brought him home knowing that one day soon he would pass. That day was March 3, 2018. I knew it was time to let him goThat was the hardest decision I ever had to make.Nicki Stevens has had to say goodbye to two cats she adopted Darwin, a domestic shorthair cat with white paws and a pink nose and Skyy, a brown tabby with green eyes and a burnt sienna nose. Darwin passed suddenly at age 10 during a move to a new house. Skyy died at age 13 of cancer treatment complications. With Darwin I cried for about two weeks straight. I was stunned, shares Nicki. With Skyy, it was different. I knew for over a year that was coming I was a wreck.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.According to the American Pet Products Association, 84.6 million U.S. households have a pet 60.2 million have a dog and 47.1 million have a cat. These statistics show that pets are an integral part of the American family, which is a reason why employers offer pet benefits, such as health insurance. Yet, few companies allow bereavement for pets.I dont think bereavement policies should dictate what relatives are worthy of your time and grief. Plenty of people are estranged from their immediate family, but would want to take leave for a sick aunt or cousin or pet who is like a child to them, says Nicki.Heather, who is a teacher, agrees. I think they need to be put in place. You are allowed to take off for a sick kid well, this (Dushi) is my sick kid.Mary Pharris, director of business development and partnerships at Fairygodboss, tells Moneyish that her companys flexible scheduling policies enabled her to take time away from work to care for her dog, Mr. Brooks, when he got sick and had many vet visits. When he passed away, Pharris says her company was very understanding, and she was able to take a day off to grieve. When facing the death of a pet, review your employers paid time off (PTO) or personal time policy. Although the bereavement policy may not apply to animals, those policies typically do not require employees to provide specific reasons for taking time.Nicki recommends, If you know the death is coming, spend time with your pet because you wont get that back. If your pet has already passed, take some time to grieve.Explore external sources like pet counselors, hotlines and support group s provided through organizations like the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement. Heather used Laps of Love, which is a network of veterinarians who offer end of life services for geriatric pets. Heather says, The hospice for dogs is amazing. They were so helpful through this horrible ordeal. Remember, grieving is natural.Everyone grieves differently, says Nicki. What You Need to Know About the Future of the Job Search
What You Need to Know About the Future of the Job SearchWhat You Need to Know About the Future of the Job Search Searching for a new job and finding the right person for a role is undeniably a task within itself for job seekers and talent acquisition professionals alike. From writing a compelling resume to nailing an interview and tracking candidates to securing an offer, theres quite a deal of heavy lifting involved for all parties.Even more, the advent of new technologies continues to redefine the job search landscape and talent industry. Every day, the ecosystem gradually evolves as candidate and employer demands continue to shift. The future of the job search is still on the horizon, but a few things are for sure. People can expect trends like artificial intelligence, online personas and mobile applications to continue to transform our world. It would be amiss to not acknowledge the emergence of artificial intelligence in the hiring and job search space . Automati on is already making waves today with chatbots, screenings, applicant tracking systems and intelligent interviews. As employers continue to use machine learning to refine their recruitment process to find the perfect candidate, job seekers will have to rise to the challenge of adapting to emerging technologies. Candidates will have to become more comfortable with interacting with machines, from writing bot-friendly resumes to speaking to them throughout the hiring process. While technology will enable efficiency within the hiring process by freeing up the time to complete mundane tasks, candidates and recruiters can also await more opportunities for face time and meaningful relationships. AI will never replace human recruiters in our industry, but it will enable recruiters to spend more human time with candidates, said Denis Edwards, Kforce Chief Information Officer. Now more than ever, job seekers are treating the job search like a shopping experience, using an average of 16 to 18 sources when looking for a job . Theyre doing their due diligence to make informed decisions with prospective employers. Even more so, candidates are increasingly becoming aware of an employers brand and reputation. The job search of the future will continue to see this trend, with job hunters seeking out more content to learn about companies and their open positions. Peer review sites like Glassdoor and social media platforms will be used to gather an insiders perspective within a company and how employees perceive an organization.Companies with a competitive advantage are sharing compelling content (not just posting jobs) that adds value - including why working at their organization is different than working at similar companies, which helps guide a candidates decision to apply or accept an offer, said Allison Kruse, Kforce Director of Content & Social Media.Online brand awareness and management will be critical for employers and recruiters who wish to attract active and pas sive candidates. For any organization looking to attract talent, the job seekers trust will be the ultimate goal.On a similar note, branding and online reputation will be equally as important for candidates searching for a job.Gone are the days of requested references validating your professionalism and skill sets being enough for prospective employers. We now live in a digital world where a job seekers online presence is just as important as the coveted resume. Theres a growing desire among employers to experience candidates in 3D - on paper, in person and online. Theyre Googling your name and will be for the foreseeable future. Candidates who want to land a job in the future will have to create the digital footprint employers want to see.Job seekers should optimize their professional brand by showcasing commitment to their work, highlighting professional achievements, curating industry content and more.Your professional brand plays a pivotal role in your career. Regardless of if you are currently looking for a new job or not, it is important to strategically design and actively manage your digital persona , Kruse said.In recent years, millennials entered the workforce and demanded job flexibility, career paths and stewardship . Currently entering the market is richtung Z - individuals born during the mid-90s to the early millennia. This generation now desires job stability in contrast to millennial job hopping.Emerging workers will likely seek roles that are practical, staple and in high demand across various industries like health care, technology and finance. In turn, employers should prepare to offer training and development opportunities to foster career growth to attract future job seekers. In fact, 7 out of 10 people say that training and development opportunities influence their decision to stay with a company. Managers must ensure that there is an investment strategy aligned to training and development priorities. This can come through resources such as enhanced learning management and enablement tools, data analytics, surveys and more, said Ashley Ehlinger, Kforce Director of Training and Development. With the onset of the digital age, mobile devices continue to rise in popularity. The trend has created a new phenomenon thats only expected to grow - applying to jobs on the go . Nearly 79 percent of millennials use their phones to apply to jobs, with Gen Xers trailing behind at 73 percent and Baby Boomers at 57.2 percent.Mobile apply jobs allow job seekers to save time by conveniently and quickly applying to jobs within minutes on their highly-accessible smartphones. Free mobile apps like Dropbox and Google Drive are excellent choices for candidates to store their resume to apply on the go easily. Downloading job apps and creating profiles also assists candidates in making the job application process as easy as one click.Ultimately, the convenience of mobile platforms should encourage employers, recruiters an d candidates to think mobile-first and consider how they can use mobile platforms to improve efficiencies in the application and hiring process. In the future to come, job seekers and hiring professionals can anticipate technology to continue to revolutionize the job hunt and improve productivity. From chatbots to online branding and more, itll be up to professionals to take advantage of emerging tools to continue to grow throughout the employment journey and stay ahead of the competition.

This guy just quit in solidarity with female coworker over boys club at FEMAThis guy just quit in solidarity with female coworker over boys club at FEMAWhen you see your coworker get mistreated, what can you do to show them youre on their side? Some show solidarity by speaking up when it happens, while others complain privately. One government employee decided to go one step further and make a stand by walking out - for good.In an act of solidarity for his coworker, the male press secretary for the Federal Emergency Management, Paul McKellips, said that he was quitting because FEMAs front geschftszimmer was a boys club that was excluding the former head of external affairs, Susan Phalen, from meetings. McKellips stepped down on February 12, following Phalens resignation earlier in the month. McKellips said that FEMA was preventing Phalen from doing her job as a public affairs officer. When the front office shut her out, you effectively shut me out as well, McKellips wrote in his two-p age resignation letter obtained by POLITICO. No matter how hard or how often she asked for a seat at the table, she was neither invited to strategic planning meetings nor given access to leadership.McKellips went on to directly accuse FEMA of a gender disparity I observed firsthand that Phalen was unable to penetrate the boys club in your front office. Female executives are not treated the same way as their male counterparts at FEMA.FEMA said that it was not commenting on the case specifically, but noted that our agency is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and respect, promoting a culture that embraces diversity and allowing all employees the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We reject any assertion to the contrary. How to show solidarity with coworkersResearch shows that McKellips is not the only person in the workplace witnessing abuse. Its a pervasive problem in many offices. A recent study found that 81% of U.S. employees said they either had been bullied o r witnessed it happening to a coworker.Joining forces with your vulnerable colleague, like McKellips did, is one research-backed strategy proven to work against bullying bosses. A study in the Academy of Management Journal found that when coworkers team up, they have more leverage to confront bullying managers. The study calls this strategy coalition formation, noting that, The leader may rely on a specific follower in the team for key performance outcomes (e.g., sales promotion). If the focal follower is able to convince a highly valued follower to form a united, coordinated front against the leader, the leader may view the focal follower as a single-unit with the valued follower. If youre a valued worker, you can show solidarity by showing that your skills are contingent on the positive treatment of your bullied coworker. You are signaling if they go, you go.Directly linking your resignation to a toxic work culture is one extreme way to provide documented proof to your bullied coll eague that they are not alone. You saw it too. When you quit in solidarity with your coworker, you are throwing up a white flag, but you are waving it proudly for all to see.
