How Do I Get Back Into A Career I Used To Love
âHow Do I Get Back Into A Career I Used To Loveâ Help from our Community âHow Do I Get Back Into A Career I Used To Love?â * After giving up her career to travel the world, Sarahâs firmly established herself in a brand-new field. But years later, the old one is calling her to return. How do you become a success all over again, when the competition is fierce, and youâre overwhelmed by how much has changed? What's your career history and current job? I took a course in newspaper journalism, then worked successfully as a journalist in my early 20s. After completing a series of mental-health-related qualifications, I'm now a full-time therapist for children and young adults. I left my old career in print journalism because I found the environment too harsh and competitive. I took some time out to travel the world, so I could discover what I really wanted from my life. It was out of curiosity that I decided to learn more about mental health. I completed my postgraduate qualifications, then fell straight into therapy work from there. How do you feel about your work? I love that my work offers a lot of flexibility and control, such as working from home when I'm not seeing clients. There's also a lot of variety. No two days are ever the same, which I really like. I also enjoy working with supportive and interesting colleagues. The problem is that I don't enjoy practical therapy work. Unlike the majority of my colleagues, therapy was never a vocation for me. I think of myself as more of an 'accidental' therapist. People often assume that I get a lot of satisfaction from my work, but the truth is that I enjoy learning about mental health more than practising what I've learned in face-to-face sessions. Even though I genuinely like my clients, I much prefer working on my own, with access to support as and when I need it. What would you like to be doing instead? I miss being creative, and writing for a living in particular. In an ideal world, I'd return to my former career as a journalist, writing features that have the potential to help people. I've set up a dedicated blog site, on which I'm going to write personal features and coaching articles. Some of these will be inspired by my career as a mental health professional. I enjoy writing fiction, so I've subscribed to a writing magazine, and started a fiction-writing course for extra inspiration. I've also volunteered to do some writing work here and there, such as copywriting for a local charity. I've started going to art workshops too, as I love painting. In the past, some of my artwork has been featured in exhibitions, but I'm not sure how I could turn my interest in that into a 'proper' career. What's the biggest obstacle in your way? The idea of going back to a writing career feels so overwhelming that I can't imagine it will ever happen. I was successful as a journalist, but my experience is in the world of print. Now that side of the industry has all but disappeared, and so much time has passed that I worry I won't be taken seriously as a writer. While the online world means there are more opportunities to write and promote yourself than ever before, it seems like everybody I meet now wants to be a writer, or do something creative with their lives. The amount of competition feels incredibly daunting. I struggle with self-doubt all the time. I'll often find myself reading online articles with a heavy heart, thinking that I could never produce anything as good. I'm hesitant about sharing my writing with a wider audience, particularly when everybody seems to want to comment on or criticise what they read online. What if the feedback I receive is overwhelmingly negative? Even though I've already written a crop of articles that I could publish, I've been stalling setting up my blog site, and letting people know about it. It's hard to imagine why any potential employer would want to hire someone like me, when there are so many younger or more experienced writers out there to choose from. Meanwhile, I've established a successful career as a therapist. I feel it will be hard for me to explain why I want to take a step 'backwards'. But I know that becoming a writer again is the best chance I'll have of being happy in my work. How do I move past all the overwhelm and self-doubt, and find my way back to a writing career? Can you help Sarah? Have you been in a similar situation, or are you in the same boat right now? How do you think Sarah could move her shift forwards? Do you know anyone she could talk to? When Im not allowed to spend money, Im a lot more creative!
When Im not allowed to spend money, Im a lot more creative! Submitted by Dont Go Over in October participant Leah P. Heres something Ive learned this past week in regards to money: When Im not allowed to spend it, Im a lot more creative. For example, a really good friend was broken up with this week. Normally, I would have taken her out for drinks or made a Breakup Basket with stuff to keep her busy or make her feel betterwine, nail polish, my favorite breakup book, Its Called a Breakup Because its Broken, etc Instead, I went over there and we watched dumb, non-romantic comedies, made headbands with materials I already had at my house, and made mixed drinks with vodka I already had in my liquor cabinet. She felt a lot better and I didnt spend any moneyalthough, I did end up buying the book for her the next day anyway. I guess if Ive learned anything, at least in the first week, its that there are always alternatives to spending money if you just put a little thought into it. But thenyesterday I bought a bra and underwear set at HM, that I didnt need, just because it was only $15, and I couldnt pass up that DEAL!! Thats how I know Im not quite there yet.

Your Career Path to a Job in Design
Your Career Path to a Job in Design Are you interested in a career in design? If so there are a number of ways to get into this varied and challenging career. One of the best things about a job in design is the fact it is so varied. No two jobs are ever the same. Of course, there are a few skills you will need in order to thrive in the industry. There are also quite a broad range of design jobs available. You could find yourself creating anything, even blast rooms! A lot of industries need blast rooms and many prefer to have their own custom design. You will need a lot of training and qualifications to get into this type of design job. Below youâll discover everything you need to know about getting into the design sector. Getting the right qualifications Qualifications arenât always important when looking for a job. However, due to how competitive the design industry is, qualifications are important to have. Around two thirds of people working within the sector have a level 4 qualification. Half of these have higher than a level 4 qualification. You can find both undergraduate and graduate courses that will give you a good head start in the design field. Put together a toolkit As featured on the Creative Bloq, putting together a toolkit will really help. This is basically something you put together to show what you can do and why you should be hired. It should include your resume. However, a traditional resume just wonât cut it these days. You need to show your creative side so a Microsoft word document isnât going to impress a company. Always have a portfolio A portfolio is one of the most important things every design candidate should have. Without one, potential employees have no idea what you are capable of. Most will ask to see samples. So how do you get samples if you havenât any previous experience? The answer is to volunteer or put together some samples in your spare time. You need to have as many different samples as possible. Ideally you should put the portfolio on a website for easy reference. Efficient networking Once you are qualified one of the main things you need to focus on is getting yourself known. This involves a lot of networking. Make use of the internet and get on sites such as LinkedIn. The site is packed full of potential employers so it is a great way to contact companies you wouldnât mind working for. Consider going freelance Design jobs arenât overly common. If you find it difficult to find a paid position, it might be worth considering going down the freelance route. There are dedicated freelance websites that have numerous jobs posted on a daily basis. Freelance may not be as secure as an employed position but it can be a great way to get into the industry. Overall getting a design job is hard work and you will need to be incredibly creative. However, provided you are willing to put in that hard work, you will end up with a rewarding job at the end of it.

Investments in Your Health in the 2nd Half of Life - Career Pivot
Investments in Your Health in the 2nd Half of Life - Career Pivot Investments in Your Health Copyright: pixelsaway / 123RF Stock Photo Have you made investments in your health? These investments in the 2nd half of life can be the most important investment you can make for your career, your finances, and your happiness. I admit itâ¦I am getting older. For my age, I am in pretty good shape (My 63rd birthday is approaching rapidly). However, some of my old habits are catching up with me and starting to cause me health issues. Things that I never worried aboutâ¦well, I need to pay attention to them now. Does this sound familiar? If you are still in your 40âs or early 50âs, some of your bad habits may not have started to affect your health, but give it time. Note: This post was originally published in May of 2016 and was updated in May of 2019. Career Your health, career, and ageism are all related. I have worked at two successful tech startups. During the first oneâ"in the middle of the dot-com boom/bustâ"I was in robust health. This was also the time that I had my near fatal bicycle accident. You can read more about that in the post, Being Hit by a Car Changed the Course of My Life. If I was not in such robust health in my mid-40âs, I doubt I would have recovered so quickly and moved through my next two career changes. Both of those career changes were very stressful. My health declined sharply at my second tech startup, as the stress and political infighting really got to me. The pictures that were taken at one of my regular events during this time really showed how much I had aged. Stress is a killerâ¦and it was killing me. I believe that, if I had been 10-15 years younger, I would have withstood the stress, but not this time. I resigned in early 2011 with very high blood pressure and other related health issues. Now, five years later, I have mostly recovered. Although Iâve spent the previous 30+ years as an employee, becoming a solopreneur has not been stress-free. I believe that taking care of your health in your 40âs and 50âs is the greatest way to fight ageism later in your career. It affects everything, including your energy, your behaviors, how you handle stress at work, and how you interact with younger colleagues. More on this in a later post. I can not emphasize enough that living a healthy lifestyle early on is the greatest factor in fighting ageism in the workplace later. Listen to the most recent episode Make investments in your health regularly. Investments in Your Health â" Finances Fidelity has published regular updates on the cost of healthcare in retirement. Their latest report said it is estimated that the average couple will need $285,000 average couplein todayâs dollars for medical expenses in retirement, excluding long-term care. As a nearly 63-year-old solopreneur, health insurance for my wife and myself exploded in price in recent years. You can read more about this in the postThe Looming Healthcare and Insurance Catastrophe for Baby Boomers. My wife has been self-employed for many years, so our health insurance came from my employer and took care of our needs. Not anymore. We have had to make a lot of compromises, which include taking a very high deductible health insurance policy, switching doctors, and paying out of pocket expenses for some drugs that my wife needs. I am proud to say that I am on NO medications. Now, I am much more careful. Should I take a tumble on my bicycle, trip, or do something really stupid, the consequences could be financially severe. I always promise my wife that, when I get on my bicycle, I will not hit cars or dogs! I actually think before I perform something that will require me to exert myself. All of this caused us to move to Mexico is the last year. You can read more our journey to becoming expats in the How to Move Abroad and Take Your Job with You series. Investments in Your Health â"Health Insurance If we had stayed in Austin for 2019, we would have spent around $19,000 in health insurance premiums for a $10,000 deductible policy. We were able to purchase a $5,000 deductible health insurance policy in Mexico for each of us for about $2,000 for theyear. This is catastrophic health insurance because of the low cost of health care in Mexico. My wife last summer, saw an endocrinologist, hematologist, dermatologist and had blood work done and spent under 150 U.S. dollars or about 3000 Mexican pesos. My wife who is a retired RN and a pain in the butt patient has been thrilled with the care and the quality of the doctors and nurses. I cannot tell you how much stress this has lifted off my shoulders. Not having to be concerned about paying for health insurance has had many beneficial effects on my wifeâs and my health. My wife will sign up for Medicare later this year when she becomes eligible. Medicare does not cover anything in Mexico but it will be a catastrophic type of insurance that if something major happens we will return to the U.S. for treatment. The move to Mexico has been a huge investment in our health. Health Effects of Moving to Mexico Healthy eating is a priority for me. I still drink a bit too much caffeine and alcohol, although I do not drink a lot of either. My biology is much more sensitive to both. I am working on that. Our move to Mexico has had a lot of positive health effects on both my wife and me. We both have lost weight and I am now at the same weight that I was when I graduated from college. I am now 6â3? and around 175 lbs and I have had to replace most of my blue jeans and other pants because they were falling off me. My blood pressure is almost back to normal. My stress levels have declined as money is no longer a worry. Our health overall has improved due to the quality of the food we consume. I know this will be hard for some Americans to believe but the industrialization of the food chain in the U.S. is very bad for our health. Changes I have made in the previous years before we moved to Mexico included: Increased water consumption. I drink little else other than waterâ"well, coffee and wine, but⦠Stretching. I am now rolling, which really helps. As an ex-marathon runner and I am still very tight. I credit both of these changes to listening to the Retirement Answer Man Podcast by my good friend Roger Whitney. In the long run, making these investments in your health will pay major dividends in the long run. Happiness I have reached the point where feeling good is no longer an option. At various times in my life, I have put up with a lot of stuff. This included: Traveling when I was exhausted Eating crappy food when traveling Working late into the night to meet deadlines I ainât doing that anymore! My mindset has improved dramatically since moving and this has a direct effect on my health. I previously wrote about this mindset shift in the post Becoming an Expat Has Dramatically Changed My Mindset. If you had told me a couple of years ago that I would be living in Mexico, my wife would be incredibly happy, my health would have improved, and financially we would be in the best position in our lives, I would have told you weresmoking something and yes you are inhaling. Feeling good makes me happy! Moving to Mexico has improved my state of mind which makes me happy. I guess that means making investments in your health a top priority. Get ahead of your peers with an apprenticeship - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
Get ahead of your peers with an apprenticeship Todays typical student will leave university with a debt of around £40,000. This sum is likely to increase as fees and living costs rise. Many graduates are asking themselves if it was even worth it, when they end up working in low-paid, insecure work or even the dreaded zero-hours contracts. They regret having invested so much time, money and effort into a degree that, it seems, is not going to repay the investment. When it is estimated that a massive 77% of people will never even pay their student loans off, the case is clear for taking another career route an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships may seem unappealing to school leavers sold a promise of a lucrative and rewarding career if they go to uni. It is true that they will have to spend some time learning the trade and earning very little. But the apprentice will be learning valuable and practical skills that will stand him or her in good stead and by the time their peers leave university, burdened by tens of thousands of pounds in debt, our former apprentice will already be earning, without owing a single penny. In spite of what we are told, learning a trade can often be far more lucrative than desk jobs once the apprentice is qualified and experienced. Plumbers, builders and the like havent yet been made redundant by technology, and a good tradesman can be assured of constant work. Many such jobs are not as localised as desk jobs can be; for example, anyone going into finance is likely to have to base themselves in London, whereas tradesmen can work all over the country. Skilled tradesmen can also find well-paid employment in manufacturing and construction; indeed, there is a shortage of qualified people in many trades. Taking an apprenticeship offers a great deal of advantages over the more glamorous path of university and a desk job. You will have the chance to get on the property ladder much earlier than your peers, gain work experience while they are still studying, and acquire skills that will always be useful. If you need any more convincing, take a look at some of the many apprenticeship jobs out there. Practical skills may have taken second place to classroom-based learning for many years now, but there are sound reasons why it makes sense to favour the former over the latter. Having a degree can teach you transferable skills for the workplace, but for all too many students, it is clear that they have been sold a lie, and that they will never recoup the time or money spent on their degree. Take up an apprenticeship, on the other hand, and youll be far better off financially.
